2025 Calgary General Election
Empowering our community with the knowledge to make informed choices in the upcoming Calgary municipal election.
Faith & Civic Duty Connection
In Islam, participation in community life is a form of amanah - a trust and duty to seek justice, uphold fairness, and contribute to the common good. By engaging in civic matters, including voting and public service, Muslims fulfill their responsibility to help shape a society rooted in compassion, accountability, and collective well-being.
Understanding the Election Process in Calgary

Important Dates:
- Advance Vote: Oct. 6-11, 2025
- Election Day: Oct. 20, 2025
Every four years, Calgarians have the opportunity to shape the future of their city by voting in the municipal election. The next election will take place in October 2025, giving residents the chance to choose their city’s Mayor, City Councillor, and School Board Trustees.
When you cast your vote, you will select:
who represents all Calgarians and leads City Council. The Mayor helps set priorities, guides city policy, and works with Council to make decisions that impact services, infrastructure, and community well-being.
One Mayor
who represents your specific ward (local area) within Calgary. Councillors bring forward the needs and concerns of their residents, propose initiatives, and vote on key decisions about the city’s budget, planning, and services.
One City Councillor
Your ward is determined by where you live. Knowing your ward and your local candidates ensures your voice is heard on the issues that matter most in your neighbourhood.
Participating in municipal elections is an important part of civic responsibility and a powerful way to contribute to Calgary’s growth and direction. By voting, you help ensure that leadership reflects the values, diversity, and priorities of all Calgarians - including the Muslim community.
Key Issues for Calgary’s Muslim Community to Discuss with Councillors

1.
Zoning and Land Use for Mosques and Islamic Centres
- Advocate for fair and transparent rezoning processes that allow mosques, Islamic schools, and community centres to be built in growing neighbourhoods where Muslim families live.
- Encourage flexibility around parking, traffic flow, and accessibility requirements.
2.
Support for Faith-Based and Cultural Educational Facilities
- Ask how the city can better collaborate with independent schools, early learning centres, and community education programs to meet the needs of Muslim families.
- Promote access to safe and affordable spaces for after-school programs, tutoring, and youth leadership initiatives.
3.
Community Safety and Inclusion
- Discuss city strategies to address Islamophobia, hate incidents, and discrimination.
- Support initiatives that build trust between communities and local law enforcement, and encourage cultural awareness training.
4.
Community Grants and Non-Profit Support
- Ask how the city supports faith-based or cultural non-profits offering social services, food security programs, and newcomer supports.
- Ensure equitable access to city funding and community partnership programs.
