Encouraging Muslim Leadership in Public Office
We need more Muslim candidates. Your voice can inspire change — your leadership can shape our future.
In every election - municipal, provincial, and federal - there is a noticeable shortage of Muslim candidates. Our community is large, vibrant, and deeply involved in every aspect of Calgary and Alberta life, yet our representation in public decision-making remains limited.
When Muslims run for office, they bring forward voices that reflect our shared values of justice (adl), integrity (amanah), and compassion (rahmah). Representation matters - not just for visibility, but to ensure that our needs and perspectives are part of shaping policies that affect education, zoning, housing, and the future of our cities and provinces.

Thinking About Running?
Running for office is an act of service and leadership. It takes courage, planning, and community connection - but most importantly, it begins with niyyah (intention) to make a difference.
Before you begin, consider:
- Your Purpose: Why do you want to serve your community? What change do you hope to bring?
- Your Community Roots: Do you have relationships within your local mosque, neighbourhood, or volunteer networks?
- Understanding the Issues: Learn about key local and provincial challenges — housing, safety, youth opportunities, and inclusion.
- Eligibility: Each level of government has specific requirements for age, residency, and nomination.
- Your Support Team: Campaigns are built on teamwork — volunteers, advisors, and community advocates who share your vision.

- Community Connections: Build relationships with organizations, mosques, and local partners who can help amplify your message.
- Visibility and Advocacy: UMAA can help highlight Muslim candidates and promote voter awareness across Alberta.

What It Takes
Running for office is not easy - but it’s needed. Our community deserves to be represented in the rooms where decisions are made. With sincerity, preparation, and support, every candidate can help build a more just and inclusive society.
Leadership in Islam is a trust (amanah). When carried out with humility, honesty, and service, it becomes one of the highest forms of community contribution.
